Denise Frame Harlan writes creative nonfiction, essays, and memoir. Her essay “And She Took Flour: Cooking Lessons with Robert Farrar Capon” was published in the anthology The Spirit of Food: 34 Writers on Feasting and Fasting Toward God, Wipf & Stock, 2010. Denise also earned an honorable mention for the VanderMey Creative Nonfiction Award 2013 for her essay Smoke Rings. She won the Duncan Eat/Write Fellowship at Dairy Hollow in 2011. She is a regular contributor to the Englewood Review of Books, and she recently served in panel discussions on literary citizenship and writing as a spiritual practice, at Calvin College’s Festival of Faith & Writing. In addition, Denise frequently writes for fiber arts magazines. She recently wrote about crowd-funding and home businesses, describing her sock-knitting start-up, Stockingfoot Knits. She is also a Companion in The Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, a world-wide Episcopal women’s religious society based at Adelynrood in Byfield MA.
Denise has taught both Introduction to Creative Writing and The Great Conversation. She also teaches as the college application essay tutor at Lexington Preparatory School. She has an MFA in nonfiction from Seattle Pacific University.
